School History

Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) began serving students in the fall of 2013 and was named after the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. The school focuses on student-centered education, social-emotional learning, and academic development for a diverse student population. 

History and Naming

  • Opening: Thurgood Marshall Elementary School opened its doors in the fall of 2013.  
  • History: The school was part of North Forest ISD and was annexed by HISD in 2013, a year after the annexation process began. 

  • Honoree: The school is named after Thurgood Marshall (1908–1993), a distinguished American lawyer and civil rights activist who became the first African-American Justice on the Supreme Court. 
  • Significance: Marshall was a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, famously arguing Brown v. Board of Education, a landmark Supreme Court decision that declared state-sponsored segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
